Ok, so I watched three channels of TV last night and on all the shows after 8.30pm there were guns and/or knives on most of them. Do we really need to see these vile weapons on our TV screens.
And it's not just Television programmes, it's also on DVD's, the Internet and PSP/XBox games. So what are our kids (willingly and inadvertently) learning as they grow up here in New Zealand? Simple really, it's OK for US citizens to live and die by the gun and those skills are being transferred into our society. Overseas Gang culture is also becoming evident in the set up of gangs in this country and it's viewed by the participants as a right of passage in their own lives.
It's becoming cool to maim and kill, and prison is no longer a deterrent as many other gang members are already there and they just mix and mingle amongst each other no doubt talking about what they have planned when they get out.
So what to do then? The simple answer is to ban all TV shows, PSP/XBox games and DVD's that not only promote gangs and gang violence, but also all those that use weapons as a tool (yes even if it's the Good Guys that are armed) Ban the lot. We don't want that kind of society here, so let's see if a petition can be started to enforce change and have the above mentioned violence done away with all together. Sure, that would probably mean up to 30% of all media forms banned from our lives, but it would be a quantitative gain if no gangs existed and if no one got shot or stabbed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time or for saying the wrong thing.
I feel it is apt now to try something - anything to arrest the crime wave. The question should not be asked if the Police become armed to protect themselves, it should be asked that our society doesn't tolerate weapons in the wrong hands nor gangs in any form that begets violence by whatever means. It should also be asked - are our children growing up without any violent input?

I agree, i stopped owning a t.v a few years ago in utter frustration at the mind numbing crap emanating from it. Yes, i noticed all the programmes about murder and crime? And i am aware that teenagers are tucked in their x-box's playing war games? I guess adults play war games as well. It's freaky shit. And i have been in that situation where you change channels and all programmes on three channels are of the same ilk? So, today i do not own a television. When you read about the amount of televisions, monitor's and computers and house hold appliances stacking up now with nowhere to go at second hand shops and recyclers, we really have to be mindful of the junk that is now polluting the planet.
ReplyDeleteYes, i think watching the junk on the telly has far reaching consequences.
