Top 20 Movies of all time.

Ok we've spent years doing online polls of your predominantly Top Ten movies of  all time.  The task I have for you is to read my list, then compose your list and post it as a reply (either a pseudonym, real name or anonymous) to the initial post.

But there is a twist.  Not only do you have to name the movies in order, but you have to also provide a brief blurb on why you chose that movie and in essence sell it to other readers.

So underway I get.

20.  Terminator (The Original) -  Raw power mixed with state of the art special effects (for the time) make this an explosive action packed movie.

19.  The Abyss - Before there was Alien this gem of a sci fi movie sprung across our screens.  The imagination of the director and co was superb in this moving movie.

18.  ET - Yup, good old aliens and kids, can't miss a trick.

17.  The Longest Day - a shoot em up war movie starring John Wayne amongst others.  I remember showing this movie on 16mm projectors at sea and five reels of film.  The winding arm got plenty of action at the same time it was full on in the movie.

16.  Girl Interrupted.-  Raw boned psychiatric Movie worth every cent of it's budget.

15.  Twelve Monkeys - A sci fi flick with a cast of Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe and Brad Pitt and a real winner.  Quite quirky and very dramatic.

14.  Shrek (all three) - I'm a sucker for green ogres and all these movies hit the funny bone deeply.

13.  The Cruel Sea - Hey I'm a retired sailor.  Shot in the 50's during the UK's boom filming period of war movies, this classic rules the waves.

12.   Blade Trilogy - Not I'm not a gore freak and surprisingly there isn't much in these ones, BUT  I do love action, sci fi and nasty vampires and Blade delivers.

11.  Stand by Me - Ok, it's a movie about kids, starring kids (River Pheonix for one) but the story is more than that, and it would have to be as Stephen King penned it.  Don't want to give too much away but it rates highly with me and many other fans.

10.  The Reader - A German made movie in English with a very touching story line and twists to die for.
.
9.  After Life -  Just finished watching this intriguing story.  It's a Japanese production with subtitles but don't let that put you off.  Bizarre could describe it, but it's a real warm tale.

8.  The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Just because I was a huge Tolkien fan and wanted New Zealand and Peter Jackson do us proud on the international front by doing the whole series with love, aroha and a feel for the books.

7.  A Clockwork Orange  - Yeah so it's probably dated now, but as a movie it rates very highly due to the vision of Stanley Kubrick and where he saw society headed.

6.  Michael  - Enough said, Travolta doing comedy.

5.  The Shawshank Redemption  - Wonderful storyline (and again penned by Stephen King)  I could watch it over and over and I do.

4.  Pulp Fiction - Ok, so you get together these headliners (Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, Tim Roth, Samuel L Jackson and John Travolta) add a touch of Quentin Tarantino and what comes out is my top 4 selection.

3.  One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest  -- Unbelievable!!  Nicholson at his finest.

2.  The Green Mile - Man this really made me like movies again.  Yep again Stephen King comes to the fore with such a wonderful and fanciful story.  This I will admit gets reruns.  Sadly edged out of number one by

1.  Avatar.-  Yep have to be a top act to outdo The Green Mile but when I saw this on big screen, and numerous replays at home the quality of the whole presentation is just superb.  One day I might get to see it in 3D.

So there ya go, that's my list.  Fire away (and you can take your time, this post won't be going away.)

5 comments:

  1. 1) La Vita e Bella [Life is Beautiful] -The story of a dedicated and loving father's ability to make the most horrific circumstances an adventure for his son, culminating in his ultimate sacrifice. The director was also the lead actor and took home an Oscar for his incredible performance. Must see!

    2) Amistad -The slavery of African nationals is confronted by a white man unafraid to stand up and speak when he sees injustice against others. Very moving and though provoking.

    3) Crash -As this story unfolds you see how one event impacts on the lives of those around you and how intertwined we can be...sometimes without our knowledge.

    4) West Side Story -A modern day, musical take on Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet tale; he from one side of town and she from another. True love pays no attention to ethnicity or affiliations.

    5) John Q -What would you do if your child was dying and the only way to save him was to ensure he got an organ transplant but your insurance didn't cover it? John Q is willing to take on the bureaucracy and would do whatever he has to.

    6) Dirty Dancing -Girl meets boy and can't resist his magnetic sensuality, especially when she sees him dance. Sparks fly and when his friend needs help she steps in, putting her relationship with family on the line to show how much she cares.

    7) Top Gun -Men in uniform fly fast planes...what can I say, its an aphrodisiac that's irresistible and this movie appeals to both men and women.

    8) Napoleon Dynamite -Being an awkward teen was never funnier. From the bland clothes to the bland attitude and expression, Napoleon is hilarious, and delivers some of the most side splitting one-liners I've ever heard. He does an unforgettable dance routine that has to be seen to be believed. Vote for Pedro!

    9) The Lion King -Disney is the giant of animated children's movies, and this has to be the best one ever. The colourful characters are relatable to young and old, with themes about love, family, coming of age and choosing our path in life that will resound with us all.

    10) For Coloured Girls -Tyler Perry's adaptation of the book written by Ntozake Shange: "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf." The issues these women face are harrowing and could be soul-destroying, but they support one another to rise above their circumstances and value the life they have.

I love movies, several of the one's you've mentioned, so there are many more I could name: The original Star Wars trilogy, The Basketball Diaries, Underworld trilogy, My Sister's Keeper, Aladin, Gremlins, The Never Ending Story, Training Day, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Shall We Dance, The Bourne trilogy, The Fugitive, Blood Diamond, Hotel Rwanda...I'll stop now or I'll be here all day! :)
