Some thoughts.
In the late 19th century the average height of European Male was 5'8' - 5'10".
The average European female stood between 5'2" to 5'6".
The average death dates for males was 42.
The average death rate for females was 45.
Medicine was not mastered then. Many infants died due to poverty so the norm was to have many children to alleviate losses. It was not unusual for families to have on average 10 children.
Based on Aotearoa figures - the following:
The average Kiwi Male stands on average 5'10" to 6'0"
The average Kiwi female stands between 5'6" to 5'10".
The average kiwi Male dies, on average, around 76.
The average Kiwi female dies on average aged 82.
Why the drastic change? Simple really basic preventative medicine and diet.
Is it good for us though? Despite inroads to medicine more people are suffering new illnesses, which medicine has trouble curing. And one thing for sure medicine will have to evolve to continue longer life for all.
