Currently NZ Army and Air Force use the Kairanga/Bunnythorpe and Gillespie Line roads to and from Linton (and through 50kph Palmy City streets.) Also, at the time of writing, Horizons and PN City Council are deliberating on a second bridge upstream (toward the east) from the current Fitzherbert one.
It's a given these days that with fuel issues haunting Defence it would be feasible to build a new 2 lane bridge from Manawatu Prison across the river to Walkers Road then points north (in convoys) and south (rail loads to Wellington Harbour/Port Nicholson to onload to Canterbury with large Army transport vehicles) with a rail loading platform at Longburn.
Seeking an idea to have the bridge as a private access unless needed for disaster relief giving the CD teams and Army ready access, and a bypass in disaster times if the main Fitzherbert Bridge is damaged.
