Steve Wlliams - A Career Exposé

Just recently, the most successful ever Caddy has announced he will be scaling back his workload pending a retirement from the sport he has been a part of for more than 36 years.  So what of Williams?  Well we know all the good stuff and we know all the bad stuff, but do we really understand and ergo appreciate the effort he has put into his occupation.

First and foremost Steve Williams is a very successful sportsman.  The figures below will give you an understanding of what I mean.  He caddied for many great golfers and as a result was always in work.  But I was staggered to put these figures together to find that he did one hell of a lot of walking in that 36 years and with a 14kg bag perennially strapped over his shoulders.  In fact this is probably a testament to all caddies as they do have the very difficult job of not only being  a pack horse, but also a mentor and on field coach.  Physically and psychologically demanding occupation indeed.

So those figures.  Remember he started his pro career at age 17 as a caddy, 36 years ago.  In 36 years he has done the following (these are averaged on tournament golf and don't take into account practice rounds or other work a caddy does around the course - he may in fact walk more then 6km per round):

Number of years
36
Number of tournaments per year
26
Number of rounds per tournament
5
Number of KM per round
6

Number of Kilometres per year
780km
Number of Kilometres per Career
28,080km

Size of Bag
13.35kg
Weight carried per round
66.75kg
Weight carried per career
2403kg

So there we go.  The man has on average walked 1/10 the Earths circumference in pursuit of his dream.  And what a dream.  Staggering stuff Steve, but can I coax a few more years out of your well worn legs and back.  I'd dearly love to see you to team up with Lydia Ko and give her all your wisdom and skill for the first few years of her pending long term career.  Good onya mate!!
