Is the Prime Ministers latest revelations about Al Queida a storm in a tea cup, or not? It's been widely known for many years that some subversive elements of society have "trained" overseas in disputable camps under the guise of terrorism or activism. And Labour jumping in with lead boots is somewhat nepotistic. Why?
Yes Libya ( and Russia and South Yemen) were all divulged back in the 80's as training areas for Maori Activists. And if memory serves me right these were revealed by a government under pressure with regards internal and external security (and yes Waihopai was featuring too). So the current situation sees the Pot calling the Kettle Black. I suppose really they (Labour) are taking a back step a little on this as their co party arrangement with The Greens sees Russel Norman doing all the talking in the media and Shearer conspicuously absent for comment (barring his diatribe in the House).
Whether the information from the Prime Minister is good or bad timing, it is a timely reminder that we're are not immune to international going ons when it comes to terrorism. And therefore we do need to keep the New Zealand public "safer" by introducing better surveillance for our security forces to protect us from a terrorist threat such as the Boston bombings. And remember this doesn't apply to just disgruntled Maori. It applies to many facets of society that don't need identifying here but we are all well aware where that threat could come from.
And let's not forget also, Labour would be under pressure from external agencies to increase our security, internal and external, otherwise things like free trade to interested partners could go out the window (amongst other things).
