Williamson exceeds other NZC batsmen efforts

It's very hard to understand where Williamsons 145* came from with regard to recent form, but come it did.  And it got me to thinking, how "big" was this innings?

To be honest, after researching Cricinfo, this score is utterly huge.  There are five batsmen in NZ cricket history that have scored more runs than Kane in ODI's but when you look at how those scores eventuated you find a very telling tale.

At the top of the list is Lou Vincent with a score of 172 but that was versus Zimbabwe.  Then you have Glenn Turner with 171* versus East Africa.  And of course there is Brendon McCullum's 166 versus powerful Ireland with James Marshall also against Ireland scoring 161. And just ahead of Kane is Rob Nicol who scored 146 versus Zimbabwe then equal with him is Nathan Astle 145 versus USA.

Yes you do see a pattern and the reason for this post.  All six scores were against minnow nations.  Williamson's effort is by far and away the very best result ever by a New Zealand batsman in all ODI's against top 8 nations.  That as I said is a massive effort and should be held in context.  It's not often as a cricketing nation that we have something to celebrate but I feel sure now that you have the information at your fingertips you'll celebrate Kane's achievement..
