Sizing up Super Rugby 2016 to Round 8

Exploding the myth that is Super Rugby crowds.  Often we see a resurgence in NZ crowds, an apparent drop off in Aussie crowds and a mixed bag from South Africa and Jaguares/Sunwolves.  And to some extent, all four scenarios show varying crowd results.

I have gone through all results to date in this year's competition, up to round 8 (details since then not available yet).

So let's start at home, and some unbelievable data.

New Zealand

Total Crowds  226,685
Average across all venues 15,122
Highest crowd 21,987 (Eden Park) which also has the next highest at 20,084
Lowest crowd 8,264 (CET Manawatu Stadium)

Now the surprise. Australia.

Total Crowds  221,100
Average across all venues  14,740 (not far behind us)
Highest crowd 24,044 Allianz Stadium
Lowest crowd  10,114 (Melbourne)

South Africa has a wide range of data returns.
Total Crowds 298,373
Average across all venues 17,551
Highest crowd 40,129 (Stormers)
Lowest crowd  5,454 (Cheetahs) and 5437 (Kings)

And last but not least - Jaguares and Sunwolves.

Total Crowds 67,683
Average across all venues  11,280
Highest crowd  19,814 (Sunwolves)
Lowest crowd  7,931  (Sunwolves)

It's quite a sobering thought that many think numbers are suggesting the game, more especially SANZAR's flagship - Super Rugby, as depicted across those member countries, is in a poor state.'  Yes the telling statistic throughout is the averages per country per stadium and those averages reflect the subject better.  The key now, if you have the time and energy is to analyse across the board say the previous 10 years.  But that won't work as the structure has changed.  Ka kite ano.
